There is a lot of
debate about whether soy products are healthy or not to eat.
Some people think they
are fine, while others believe that their high levels of phyto-estrogens cause
hormonal and reproductive problems.
My take on it is that
soy products are okay to consume but they need to be fermented – tofu and miso,
being two examples – and I only eat small amounts of them. Soy milk is
not fermented and is something that I completely avoid, even if it is organic.
One issue that is
indisputable is that genetically-modified soy presents very, very serious
health risks.
And given that 91% of
the soy produced in the U.S. is genetically-modified, it is something that
everyone needs to be aware of.
Here are the
frightening facts about genetically-modified soy.
1) According to
Russian researchers at the Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian
Academy of Sciences and the National Association for Gene Security, hamsters
that were fed very high GM-soy diets for two years over three generationsproduced horrifying results.
By the third
generation, most of the hamsters lost the ability to have babies, showed slower
growth, and suffered a high mortality rate among the pups.
Furthermore, some in
the third generation even had hair growing inside of their mouths!!!
2) In 2005, Irina
Ermakova of the Russian National Academy of Sciences reported thatmore
than half the babies from mother rats fed GM-soy died within three weeks.
Even more shocking was
when Ermakova fed male rats genetically-modified soy, their testicles changed
from the normal pink to dark blue!
3) According to
researchers at York University in England, soon after genetically-modified soy
was introduced into that country, soy allergies skyrocketed 50%.
4) The Weston A. Price
Foundation has filed a lawsuit against the State of Illinois on behalf of
prisoners who suffered serious health complications by being fed excessive
amounts of soy products. In 2004, the state of Illinois began using large
amounts of soy in prison menus in order to save money and use less meat.
The lawsuit claims
that the soy being fed to the plaintiffs, in the amounts being fed to them, constitutes cruel
and unusual punishment in violation of the eighth amendment to the Constitution, as
well as a denial of plaintiffs’ liberty in violation of their due process
rights under the fourteenth amendment to the Constitution.
The prisoners’ health
complaints include chronic and painful constipation alternating with
debilitating diarrhea, vomiting after eating, sharp pains in the digestive
tract, especially after consuming soy, passing out, heart palpitations, rashes,
acne, insomnia, panic attacks, depression and symptoms of hypothyroidism, such
as low body temperature (feeling cold all the time), brain fog, fatigue, weight
gain, frequent infections and thyroid disease.
Even though we do not
know for certain whether the soy being fed to these inmates was
genetically-modified or not, I cannot imagine that a prison is going to feed
them organic soy, especially when they are trying to save money.

Just remember that
approximately 75-80% of the food on supermarket shelves is
genetically-modified, and conventional food companies put soy into more
products than you can imagine.
If you’re going to eat
any soy product, please make sure that it is certified organic.
